How not to Deal with Acne and Pimples
by Audrey Roberts, author of ‘Clear Skin Magic’
When dealing with skin breakouts like pimples and acne, you need to avoid committing the same mistakes that many people do. Here are the ultimate no-no’s when it comes to getting rid of pimples and acne.
- Squeezing, pinching, and pricking. Pricking should only be done by a professional. If you need to immediately shrink a pimple, then head on over to a dermatologist’s clinic so it can be treated properly. If you squeeze, pinch, and prick your pimple all by yourself, you risk spreading the infection and leaving an unsightly pimple scar. The urge to pinch and squeeze a skin breakout stems from impatience. Resist the urge, because the resulting pockmarks and scars may be permanent.
- Slathering on gobs of products that contain salicylic acid. If you’d rather treat your acne and pimples using drugstore products that contain salicylic acid, the most common active ingredient in acne and pimple topical gels and creams, then you may not want to treat those products as regular facial creams. Do not put large gobs of them on your face to make your zit heal “faster.” It won’t. The healing process is dependent on how your body naturally responds to the treatment. Put a small amount only on the infected area. You can damage the healthy areas of your skin with the drying and slightly burning salicylic acid. The same is true for the overuse and misuse of products that contain benzoyl peroxide, and tretinoin.
- Overcleansing and rubbing in order to clear the skin breakout. Washing your face more than twice a day in a last-ditch effort to “wash away” the pimple or acne exacerbates the problem. Washing strips away your skin’s natural protective layer. If your facial skin feels tight and taut after cleansing, then you are probably overdoing it.
